All 18 Pokemon Types Explained

Pokemon types form the backbone of competitive battling. Every move and every Pokemon belongs to at least one of these types, and understanding their interactions is the single most important skill for VGC success.

Offensive Powerhouses

Ground is widely regarded as the best offensive type, hitting five types super-effectively (Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, Steel) while only being resisted by two (Grass and Bug) and immunized by one (Flying). Earthquake remains one of the most common moves in VGC Champions for good reason.

Ice is another elite offensive type, covering Dragon, Flying, Grass, and Ground. Despite poor defensive stats on most Ice-types, moves like Ice Beam and Blizzard are staples on Pokemon that can learn them. In the current meta, Froslass leverages STAB Ice moves alongside its Ghost typing.

Fairy rounds out the top offensive types with super-effective hits on Dragon, Fighting, and Dark. Moves like Moonblast and Dazzling Gleam are devastating in doubles, where they can hit both opponents.

Defensive Walls

Steel is the premier defensive type with 10 resistances and a Poison immunity. Kingambit, Corviknight, and Archaludon all rely on Steel typing to survive hits they otherwise could not. However, Steel's weaknesses to Fire, Fighting, and Ground mean these threats must always be addressed in team composition.

Water offers solid defensive coverage with just two weaknesses (Electric and Grass) while resisting Fire, Water, Ice, and Steel. Combined with moves like Scald that can burn physical attackers, Water-types like Basculegion and Pelipper serve as reliable pivots in the Champions meta.

Dual-Type Interactions

When a Pokemon has two types, the damage multipliers from each type multiply together. This creates some extreme matchups that every competitive player should memorize.

Abilities That Change Type Effectiveness

Several abilities in Pokemon Champions modify how types interact, and forgetting about them can cost you a game. Our type calculator factors these in automatically.

AbilityEffectCommon Users
LevitateImmune to GroundGengar, Rotom forms
Flash FireImmune to Fire, boosts own Fire movesChandelure, Heatran
Volt AbsorbImmune to Electric, heals HPJolteon, Lanturn
Lightning RodRedirects Electric moves, boosts Sp.AtkTogedemaru, Raichu
Water AbsorbImmune to Water, heals HPVaporeon, Gastrodon
Storm DrainRedirects Water moves, boosts Sp.AtkGastrodon
Thick FatHalves Fire and Ice damageSnorlax, Hariyama
Dry SkinImmune to Water, weak to Fire (1.25x)Toxicroak

In VGC doubles, redirection abilities like Lightning Rod and Storm Drain are particularly impactful because they protect your partner Pokemon from attacks they would otherwise be weak to. For example, pairing Gastrodon with a Water-weak Pokemon like Incineroar lets Storm Drain absorb Surf and Muddy Water while boosting Gastrodon's Special Attack.

Type Coverage in Team Building

A well-built VGC team does not just stack the strongest individual Pokemon. It ensures that your six team members collectively cover each other's weaknesses and can hit every type in the meta for at least neutral damage. Our team builder includes a real-time type coverage matrix that highlights gaps in your team's offensive and defensive coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Pokemon types are there?
There are 18 types in total: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel, and Fairy. Each one interacts differently with every other type.
How does dual typing work in Pokemon?
Damage multipliers from each type stack multiplicatively. A Water/Ground Pokemon takes 4x from Grass because both Water and Ground are weak to Grass. An immunity from one type always takes priority, so Water/Ground is still immune to Electric.
What abilities change type effectiveness?
Levitate gives Ground immunity, Flash Fire blocks Fire, Volt Absorb and Lightning Rod negate Electric, Water Absorb and Storm Drain block Water, and Thick Fat halves Fire and Ice damage. Our calculator accounts for all of these.
What is the best defensive type?
Steel is generally considered the best defensive type with 10 resistances and a Poison immunity. Steel/Fairy is one of the strongest defensive type combinations in the game, though it remains vulnerable to Fire and Ground.
